About artist Tony Smith …

Growing up in California offered artist Tony Smith a landscape of opportunities from which to cull objects for his artwork. From driftwood and other gifts from the sea to a magical bamboo forest that rose to the clouds from behind his family home, earth, sea, and sky provided inspiration for his sculpture art, photography, sketches and paintings.

As a child, Tony looked at his surroundings with an eye toward redefining and reinventing whatever he spied in mountains, junkyards and along the seashore. Whether rusted, bent, dented or marred, these scrap treasures became captivating pieces of art. Each creation reminds the viewer that beauty remains in every cast-off and hundred of life tales can still be told from another’s junk ,things from the sea and treasures from mountains.

Now living in Colorado, Tony’s passion for re-creating found objects continues. His large sculptures --- made from wire, motor parts, wood and discarded rebar --- are equally at home in the yard or indoors. Many of Tony’s sculptures come from his love for dragons and their historical place in mythical legend and spirituality. In his hands, the dragon becomes a fantasy creature that despite its fierce presence, kindly bestows good fortune to all who gaze upon it.

He is currently working on a series of these magical dragons to accompany one of his favorite creations, Ezmarelda, an outdoor fantasy dragoness with a 7-foot wingspan, who keeps a watchful eye over the artist’s home in Fort Collins.

Tony also creates unique one-of-a-kind birdhouses that are part of another mythical community --- the enchanted Swallow Hollow Valley. Here, birds of a feather from the sea, land and mountains reside in delightfully embellished homes.

His whimsical, functional bird abodes are made from recycled materials including clockworks, copper, rock from Colorado mountains and riverbanks, driftwood from the Pacific beaches, bamboo, dried mosses, fallen tree branches, baling wire, wood from deteriorated fencing and barns, trinkets and anything rusty culled from his travels.

Tony considers the materials he uses to be gifts from nature and each of his birdhouses is intended to someday return to the earth to create another old-yet-new  “gift” for future artisans or collectors. The houses will weather well if placed outdoors, but are equally at home residing inside.

In addition, Tony is collecting  photographs of California and Colorado scenes into a series of prints, and will soon release greeting cards that feature his original watercolor paintings.
